More Sidewalks for Seattle

From a Seattle Press Release that went out today

Mayor Greg Nickels announced today his new sidewalk program - Keeping Pace - will increase the number of sidewalks in Seattle. This week Nickels sent legislation to the Council requiring the inclusion of sidewalks in new residential projects within areas of the city where most development is happening, and in all commercial developments, regardless of size.

“Sidewalks are an important part of Seattle’s transportation agenda and one of my goals is to make Seattle the most walkable city in the nation. But many parts of our city have no sidewalks. With this legislation, we can begin building Seattle’s next transportation system one foot at a time,” said Nickels.

I had no idea there was a lack of sidewalks in Seattle. I guess I am so used to living on Capitol Hill that I just assumed the entire city was covered in sidewalks. Anyone live in a neighborhood here in Seattle that lacks sidewalks?

MTV & Real Networks team up to take on iTunes

Local company Real Networks has teamed up with MTV to form a new digital mp3 company. (think iTunes)

My thoughts on this are as follows:
I love Real Networks. Rhapsody is a great service as long as you don't try to sync it with a Sansa Mp3 Player(Major Headache). Their biggest mistake was not creating an interface like iTunes that would work with any MP3 Player allowing the user to easily create playlists and organize their music on their desktop. They could have incorporated some more social networking aspects to their business as well. Actually they should have just bought a company like Last.FM

Then there is MTV, a dieing machine. MTV does not play music, and people don't turn to MTV to learn about what's new in music. They have become a great channel for teen soap operas but that's pretty much it.

MTV has tried on several occasions to enter the MP3 world but failed miserably. Anyone remember URGE (Microsoft and MTV). The Press Release for the new MTV and Real partnership reminds me alot of the 2005 press release for URGE that read

"RealNetworks, MTV form new digital music company"

Both companies need some new talent to bring in some new ideas and a better marketing team. Rhapsody ran those horrible infomercials about their all you can eat service and MTV is so full of themselves they can't see past the 1990's.

So in my opinion in 4 years MTV and Real will have parted ways, MTV will still be known for rich spoiled 16 year olds (My Sweet 16) and Rhapsody will still be running infomercials.

This series of site-specific contemporary dance performances, staged in public spaces, explores the interactions and relationships of people both to a space and to each other, and how these affect our sense of who/what "belongs" in each space. Each performance takes this question of "who/what belongs" into account as it surprises the audience with dance in unexpected places and with unexpected interactions. Part of the 4Culture King County Performance Network Site Specific Art Happenings. Taxicab Flat Rate to Airport Temporarily Suspended

During Planned I-5 Lane Closures, Aug. 10-29

SEATTLE – City of Seattle officials announced today a temporary suspension of the $28 flat rate from the downtown hotel district to Sea-Tac Airport during the I-5 lane closures, planned for Aug. 10-29. Fares will instead be computed by the taximeters to ensure cab drivers are fairly compensated for what are expected to be longer trips due to traffic delays. The flat rate will be reinstated when traffic delays due to construction have ended.

Traffic delays have a direct impact on fares because when taxicabs operate at speeds slower than 15 miles per hour, taximeters use a 50 cents per minute time charge, instead of the $2 per mile distance charge. For example, a 40-minute delay would add $20 to the fare.

Ordinance 121131, adopted by the City Council in April 2003, authorizes the director of the Department of Executive Administration to temporarily suspend the flat rate from the downtown hotel district to Sea-Tac Airport when conditions result in an average increase of ten (10) minutes to the normal trip time and are beyond the control of the drivers. The Aug. 10-29 construction is expected to cause increased trip times to the airport.

“Time charges are programmed into taximeters to more fairly compensate taxicab drivers for providing service in heavy traffic conditions, such as rush hour traffic or event traffic. If there were no time charge, taxicab drivers could avoid working certain areas or times and seriously limit the availability of taxicab service,” explained Craig Leisy, manager of the consumer affairs unit. Taximeters are regularly tested and sealed by Seattle taxicab inspectors to assure accuracy.

The flat rate between the downtown hotel district and Sea-Tac Airport was established in 2000 to reassure out-of-town visitors that taxicabs were taking the most direct route to the airport and not overcharging. Many cities have established flat rates between their downtowns and airports for the same reason.

Taxicab passengers going to the airport during the I-5 closures are encouraged to share trips and the fares, or try to plan airport trips during off-peak hours when traffic may be lighter.

Seattle Animal Shelter continues “Habitat 4 Hounds”

8th Annual “doghouse drive” extended through August

SEATTLE — The Seattle Animal Shelter is continuing its eighth annual doghouse drive to help pet owners in need. Through “Habitat 4 Hounds,” the shelter is accepting donations of new and used, good-quality doghouses and dog igloos through Aug. 31, 2007. The doghouses will be distributed to needy pet owners to provide protection from the weather for their pets.

“This is the time of year when many people are clearing out unused items from their garages and basements. If you have a doghouse that you no longer need, we hope you’ll consider donating to ‘Habitat for Hounds.’ We would like to get a head start and have as many dog shelters available for needy pet owners so they will be able to provide protection for their dogs before the cold weather hits,” says Seattle Animal Shelter Director Don Jordan.

The Seattle Animal Shelter will accept new and used doghouses and dog igloos through Aug. 31, 2007. The shelter reserves the right to refuse any item that is either badly soiled or in a state of disrepair. Doghouses and igloos will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis to anyone who is in need.

“Although we do not advocate leaving dogs to live outside, the reality is some dog owners do not allow their dogs inside their homes. Doghouses are useful year-round, providing shade from the sun and protection from the rain,” adds Jordan.

The shelter is located at 2061 - 15th Ave. W., one mile south of the Ballard Bridge. It’s open every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for licensing, and noon to 6 p.m. for adoptions. For more information, call (206)386-PETS (7386) or visit the Web site at www.seattleanimalshelter.org.
