KEXP Announces 5th Annual Summer BBQ Featuring Cloud Cult, Pela, The Blakes

KEXP (90.3FM and KEXP.ORG) is pleased to announce the Fifth Annual KEXP Summer BBQ from 3 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, August 18th on the lawn behind South Lake Union Discovery Center at 101 Westlake Ave. North in Seattle. This year's lineup features: emotional folk and electronic influenced pop collective Cloud Cult, whose dynamic sound and live shows are reminiscent of Arcade Fire and The Polyphonic Spree; Pela, one of the best bands to hit the KEXP airwaves in a long time with their passionate, anthemic alt-rock sound that evokes comparisons to early U2, The Pixies and the Replacements; The Blakes, deservedly one of the most-hyped and exciting bands in Seattle right now and a very special headlining guest that regularly sells out their live shows.

This all-ages community event brings together thousands of music lovers from throughout the Pacific Northwest to enjoy the sounds of live performances from breakthrough Northwest artists and established national bands. An annual fundraiser for KEXP and KEXP.org, the BBQ is an excellent opportunity for listeners and members to meet staff, take a tour of KEXP’s studios.

Keep pets safe and sane over the Fourth of July holiday

SEATTLE — With Fourth of July celebrations just a few days away, the Seattle Animal Shelter urges pet owners to take extra precautions to protect their pets from fireworks. The shelter also reminds owners to make sure their pets are licensed to give them the added protection that comes with a license.

The shelter will be closed on July 4. If you need assistance, please contact the Seattle Police Department at 911.

“The Fourth of July is one of our busiest days of the year,” says Seattle Animal Shelter Director Don Jordan. “Many animals are frightened by fireworks and some pet owners will see a side of their animal that they’ve never seen before. ‘Fido’ or ‘Lady’ can go from a beloved family pet to a ‘Tasmanian Devil Dog’ in a matter of minutes.”

Jordan offers the following tips to protect pets on the Fourth of July:

• Keep pet indoors or otherwise secured when fireworks are being shot off.
• Consult your veterinarian beforehand if you think your pet may benefit from being tranquilized.
• Take your pet outside to relieve itself before it gets dark.
• If you take your pet to a park, do not leave it locked in a car.
• Do not take your pet to public fireworks displays.
• Make sure your pet is wearing proper identification, such as a current pet license.

Without exception, and as part of the shelter’s “zero tolerance policy” regarding unlicensed pets, officers will issue $125 failure to license citations to owners of unlicensed pets.

The costs for pet licenses are:

Dog: one-year $40 ($20 if spayed or neutered); or two-years $62 ($30 if spayed or neutered).

Cat: one-year $25 ($15 if spayed or neutered); or two-years $40 ($22 if spayed or neutered).

If a pet wearing its license shows up at the shelter, the owner is notified. If an officer finds a licensed pet in the field, it will be returned to its owner instead of being taken to the shelter. Experience shows that often an injured animal wearing a license is more likely to receive veterinary care if the owner is not around. Revenue from pet license fees helps support efforts such as protecting public safety, preventing animal cruelty, solving nuisance animal problems and providing low-cost spay and neuter services.

The shelter will resume regular hours on July 5; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. for licensing, and noon to 6 p.m. for adoptions. The shelter is located at 2061 - 15^th Ave. W., approximately one mile south of the Ballard Bridge.

New Park Coming to Capitol Hill

SEATTLE - Councilmember David J. Della announced the passage of legislation to acquire land in Capitol Hill for new park space. The land, currently a parking lot at 16th and Howell, will be acquired, in part, by funds from the Pro Parks Levy.

"With the density in many of our neighborhoods, it is important that we find ways to create more open space. The ability to turn a parking lot into a neighborhood park for families and children is a great opportunity," said Della. The Pro Parks Levy, approved by Seattle voters in 2000, has enabled the City to invest $198.2 million to help acquire land for parks and open space, develop hundreds of capital projects, enhance recreation programs, and improved the operations of parks throughout the city. Acquiring this property will help meet the City's goal of providing parks within walking distance for residents in our urban villages, particularly those in the Center City, and will serve the needs of families on Capitol Hill for many years to come.

"The future park site at 16th and Howell will provide another opportunity for all of Seattle's families to come together and share in a new park, adding to our city's treasured open space" said Della. "I am excited to work with the Parks Department on this project, and look forward to the positive impact this park will have on the neighborhood."
