The onset of AIDS “was a health crisis, but it was also a civil rights crisis,” recalls Carol Sterling, former director of the Chicken Soup Brigade. This week, Community Stories looks back to the 1980’s and the start of the AIDS epidemic in Seattle. The history is told through the words of people--including Sterling, City Councilmember Tom Rasmussen, Seattle Gay News Editor George Bakan and AIDS Program Director/King County Bob Wood--who lived and worked on the front lines in the community.

AIDS Action & Awareness Day

I am currently at the Sundance Film Festival but wanted to quickly remind everyone that AIDS Action & Awareness day is less than a month a way. Please join the facebook event page here.

Every two years, advocates from across Washington State gather in Olympia to educate state lawmakers about the need for HIV/AIDS prevention and care services in our state. 2009 will be a critical year for HIV/AIDS advocates - Washington State Legislature will be faced with a $6 billion budget deficit- the largest in state history.

This is the first year that organizations like Lifelong AIDS Alliance could actually be lose massive amounts of funding which means they will have to turn people away who really need help, support, health insurance etc.

So if you are free on 2/18/09, join us in Olympia

Lifelong AIDS Alliance is proud to host the 15th Annual Dining Out For Life on Thursday, April 24, 2008! Dine at a participating restaurant on this day and 30% of your meal cost will be donated back to Lifelong in support of our care services.

Gay Bingo Update

Lifelong AIDS Alliance released a press release concerning the Glamazonia situation and the future of Gay Bingo. You can read about it here

In short LLAA could not come to an agreement with Thom (Glamazonia) over the LLAA harassment policy.

"Our harassment policy covers all Lifelong employees, volunteers, board members, donors, and contractors with aim to create "an atmosphere where there is respect for all human dignity." We had asked him to treat our staff and volunteers with dignity. Thom didn't feel that "GLAM" could adhere to the policy."

Which is a fair statement for an organization to look out for its employees especially if there has been complaints in the past. I guess well find out soon enough what next years gay bingo will be like:

Glamazonia leaving Gay Bingo

I am sad to learn via the Stranger Slog that the Lifelong AIDS Alliance has let Glamazonia go and she will not be returning next season to host Gay Bingo. There are even rumors that Drag Queens might be gone all together.

I really don't know what LLAA is thinking but am waiting eagerly to hear what they have to say about this. There aren't to many good Drag Queens in this city and I don't know who they could possibly get to replace Glamy but if the rumors are true that Drag Queens are gone all together from the Gay Bingo Events then I will most definitely be staying home.
